I just got 2 emails from Marble Host, sent only 13 minutes apart at about 3am. The first email says I need to reactivate my account. Then the email just a few minutes later says my free web site hosting account was deleted: "You have not reactivated your account at marblehost.net within the week from the day you recieved your reactivation code. Marblehost.net has therefore corresponding to the Terms of Use deleted your account and data." Why do they email at 3 in the morning and claim I have week to re-activate my account, and then delete it a few minutes later? I assume they deleted everyone's free hosting account.

Despite their "about us" page saying "This service is mainly aimed at people who knows a lot about web site building and server side programming", I can't find any technical specs anywhere about their hosting service, not even bandwidth or free web space limits. The phpwebftp won't upload files or create directories. FTP did allow me to upload some filetypes, including mp3, exe, and zip files. Most hosts don't allow these file types. Their log viewer (which only outputs raw log file) requires that you use a seperate password. (your activation code -- mine is 32 characters long, and it doesn't look like it can be changed). I have been checking this free hoster site out for less than a day, so it isn't a very thorough review.

This free hosting service started over a year ago as Zvf.dk, but later changed its domain name to marblehost.net. The service was not available for most of this year (their "about us" page gives the reason: "after all, it is just hobby project"). Their freehosting service is mainly aimed at people who know a lot about website building and serverside programming.

The signup process was very slow.  After registering, the first activation email took several hours to send. Then it took about a week for the free hosting account to become active. Your free subdomain looks like username.marblehost.net.

Your free web hosting acount, once finally setup, is preloaded with "HelloWorld" sample scripts in PHP, JSP and Java Servlet, and CGI-BIN with C, Perl, Python scripts. Your Perl, Python, and C scripts will only run from your cgi-bin directory. Php5 is running in suPHP mode, and PHP safe_mode is set to OFF. Marble Host provides Java server side scripting ability. Using Tomcat 5.5 and Apache 2, with the mod_jk connector, the free web space hosting server supports server side Java: JSP 2.0 Servlets 2.4, and you can modify your web.xml file. You can have one postgresql data base, but you must activate it first (see their "Tools" page).

You can either upload with a normal ftp-client, or supposedly by using the phpwebftp found in the "Tools" page (the phpWebFTP version 3.3a looks great, and some of its functions worked, but seemingly it is not configured right on their web server, as I could not upload new files with it). You can FTP files using a FTP program; use "marblehost.net" as the FTP server host name. Make sure you upload files within the htdocs folder (not the default FTP folder, which is one folder higher). My sample SSI file was not parsed, but phpinfo test file showed that PHP5 Version 5.1.4 works. Using the "Tools" page on their main site, you can access phpWebFTP, create a postgresql database for your account and accesss it with phpPgAdmin, view your error_log with logviewer, and resend an email if you have forgotten your activation code and/or password. The free web space storage amount and bandwidth limit are not specified on their web site.

Overall it offers good free PHP hosting, JSP Servlets, and other good hosting features such as Postgre SQL database :-), but has a few downsides: very slow account activation, browser file upload did not work in phpWebFTP, and seemingly the freehost may not be reliable to stay for long :-(.
