They don't mention the size limit is only 4 MB for files, which is pretty important.  Which makes the site worthless as far as I'm concerned.

A very nice site, the service has got better recently performance wise, emails seem to be frequent and reliable.  However I would strongly recommend setting your members email addresses to hidden and also to set the group to invite only (so you don't bet bogus spammers trying to join your group). Besides that the service seems very reliable.

I as a defacto manager of a smartgroup forum, helping out the owner of the group I have had huge problems with worms that, according to the header information are originating on the smartgroup mail servers locally. I can stop them with AV s/w of course but I have had zero success trying to communicate with smartgroups help. Their technical support email addresses do not exist (according to their own server) or there are autoreponders with dummy return addresses.

So to further clarify where the problem was I joined the managers support forum where all my messages to report the perceived worm problem - hey maybe I'm wrong, find out if other managers had a similar problem or even report the non-existent support email accounts were all censored. The support fourm manager then proceeded to bounce any of my requests as to why I was censored.

In my many years in IT this is the worst support I have ever had for any product or service - and I have dealt with some poor companies in my time. This is the absolute rock bottom.

This has motivated to provide a rating for them publicly which I have never bothered to do before.

Since August of 2003, I've had a rather successful group at the SG. They do have problems with their service. I believe this might be due to the PHP software they are using. It tends to be buggy. Also connectivity is often slow with their server. A narrow bandwidth pipeline perhaps. Aside from the technical issues, the service isn't terrible. I've had contact with their support team and they were quite helpful, addressing my group's bandwidth issues promptly. Overall, their service has improved quite a bit over the past year and a half. Far more group-owner friendly than Yahoo is at the moment. I think they are just "running to catch up" where the server issues are concerned...

No communication with support unless it's their idea. Often down for long periods in late 2003, supposedly due to denial of service attacks. Recently one new member signing onto our group kicked off an "infinite do loop" of email to the managers of the group, all of whom were able to unsubscribe - except the creator (ich.) For over two weeks I received 3 to 8 emails a minute. During the hail of thousands of emails I sent urgent requests for help to two support addresses at SmartGroups and to this date - a month later - have yet to hear anything from them.

That was the last straw. I had numerous complaints as new members tried to register and could not negotiate the process - again with no help from "support." Not much better at Yahoo, so until this I kept a few groups on SmartGroups. Now actively pulling my group to Yahoo.

Think well more than twice before committing time and resources to a group site that has no support response - ZERO.

Cute little site, but can get a bit confusing.

I found the site very easy to use and i especially liked the diversity of communities available (donkeys and all sorts).
